Fundamental
Born in 1979, Jason Dragna grew up skateboarding in New Orleans, Louisiana. Surrounded by a melting pot of cultures in the port city, the young DJ/Producer was exposed to a wide variety of musical styles. A product of the birthplace of Jazz, home of Mardi Gras Indians, Jazz Fest, Bourbon Street, Bounce Rap, and the infamous State Palace Theater, his innate party rocking abilities have been naturally ingrained through the decades.
Dragna began playing various instruments in 1994 and formed many short lived local projects while in high school and later while majoring in Audio/Visual Arts at Loyola University. In 2000 he quit college, purchased his first pair of Technics 1200s and began rocking house parties almost immediately. By 2001 Fundamental was making beats on a borrowed MPC 2000XL and holding down weekly hip hop nights in the French Quarter and surrounding area. After honing his skills for a few years he began entering local competitions and in 2005 won 1st place in both the Local and District Guitar Center Spinoff. Past competitions include KOOL Mixoff, DMC, Breaklanta, Guitar Center Iron DJ, and King of Scratch.
Fundamental has shared the stage with many artists over the years including: Murs, Teeko, Shortee, Faust, Klever, Qbert, Shortkut, Rough CZ, Commix, Juju, TC Izlam, Ol Dominion, Josh Martinez, Scratch Bastard, Quest, T-Rock, Dave Paul, and C Rayz Walz. He relocated to the live music capital of the world, Austin, Texas in September 2005 after his lakefront studio and home in New Orleans were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. After rebuilding his studio and replenishing his music collection, Fundamental emerged into the Austin music scene and quickly gained the respect of his peers. Fundamental is available for lessons, private parties, fashion shows, corporate events, pr/marketing events, conferences, conventions, concerts, clubs, and competitions.
Sophisticated scratch techniques, trick mixing, beat juggling, drumming, and impeccable track selection are just a few of Fundamental’s long list if virtues. His past DJ sets have included the use of a wah wah pedal, and various effects such as echo, flanger, and distortion to create note progressions and melodies using only the pitch control of the turntable. Fundamental possesses a technical swagger, originality, creativity, professionalism and versatility seldom seen in today’s digital world of push button, vanity driven, hipsters posing as DJs.
